Yes, I'm a little late reviewing on this book (it was out months ago) but this book now is one of my favourites. I'm a fan of Holly Black works from Spiderwick to Tithe; both concerning faeries but of different ends of the spectrum when it comes to the tone and everything else.
This book is not about faeries but it's still set in an alternate world where magic and curseworkers (put it in simple terms: people who are able to work magic) exists however, magic was outlawed long ago that these people turn criminal in order to survive (or they can just lead a normal life like us, never to use their powers for the greater good). I'd put off reading it since I bought it from Kinokuniya so busy with school work
Spoiler warning!
In beginning of the book first scene, you find out that the main character just awoke on the roof of a school building after sleepwalking on a cold winter night and that puts on the edge of your seat already. Cassel the main character is a really smart guy (smart here I mean street smart not book smart). He comes from a family of workers but he's not one (no more spoilers for you, but you can already guess). His mum is a con-woman who got into jail for working some rich millionaire (she's an emotion worker, one touch and she can make you love her so much that you'll give her your everything — even your heart).
This book is full of lies, cons and so much curses and the twist (though a little obvious to me) adds so much to this book. I'm now reading Red Glove the second book to this series. If you haven't got White Cat, go get it, if you have it but left it in a dusty cover, go retrieve it and read it NOW!
